The craftsmen of Kerala are renowned across the world for their wood carving skills. They continue to work largely in the style of their ancestors with the simplest of tools. A number of these unique products are available on our site.

The artisans have only their skills to bring them their livelihood. Our efforts are helping them find ways to translate their craft into a realistic wage and thus better living conditions. These artisans are experts in carving wooden elephants and other handicrafts.

Many master craftsmen, like Kumaran Ashan and Joy, have over half a decade of experience in the field. Traditional artisans learn their crafts from their father. These artisans are in danger of becoming a dying breed, as the younger generation are looking for employment in other areas as they do not find the traditional occupations remunerative enough. However, with better returns for their produce many youngsters are once again studying their inherited trade. Old masters are now apprenticing youngsters and teaching them their craft.

With a little help, the artisans can acquire income-enhancing skills and so improve the well-being of the community.
